Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Modotech’s ISi different from other P&C insurance software?

ISi distinguishes itself through an object oriented design that focuses on how a policy or claim object moves through the system rather than on line of business specifics. We achieve this through flexible data storage structures that allow any data element to attach to any policy object, making processing independent of the line of business or even a particular client's program. This allows us to easily customize the system for unique programs. Rather than focusing on bureau programs, ISi's design facilitates proprietary programs.

ISi features a unique, table-driven architecture. The programs needed for the entire policy lifecycle - including rating, quoting, binding, endorsements, reporting, claims, accounting, and reinsurance - are all connected within a single modular system. Most configurations are not hard-coded, allowing for greater flexibility and faster adaptation to client rules and rating logic.

The platform supports third-party integrations for functions such as AI analysis, rating and underwriting data, and custom reporting. In addition, ISi streamlines distribution management by tracking agent activity, maintaining detailed agent records, and enabling granular permission controls. ISi is specifically designed for small to mid-sized P&C insurers.

What features are included in the ISi policy administration system?

ISi (Internet Solutions for Insurance) is a highly flexible, web-based policy administration suite that handles the entire insurance lifecycle. It provides real-time access for agents and internal staff to quote, bind, and issue policies directly over the internet. Additionally, the platform features automated renewals, an automated billing cycle with credit card and EFT payment support, robust underwriting and claims management tools, agent commission statements, and a fully integrated General Ledger for accounting.

Is ISi customizable?

Yes, the ISi system is highly customizable. It was specifically developed to use a single, common code base for all clients while still providing the ability to deeply customize and extend its capabilities to meet unique business needs.

Whether customized by Modotech or by your own in-house "Client Developers," the most important rule of ISi customization is that the core base system behavior must never be directly changed.

Clients can choose their own application questions, rating logic, and rules, which can later be changed with table configurations, not coding. They can determine the workflow they want and set the look and feel of their dashboard. Many clients create and manage their own custom SQL or CFML reports using ISi too.

How does the E-Sign process work in ISi, and do policyholders need an account to sign documents?

ISi fully supports electronic signatures for documents like applications and endorsements, and policyholders do not need an ISi account or login to sign them. When a document requires a signature, the system generates a unique, secure link and sends it to the insured via email or SMS text message

Upon clicking the link, the user is directed to a secure signing page where they can review the actual text they are agreeing to and input their full signature, initials, dates, or checkbox confirmations as defined by the document's setup

The system actively tracks the status of these signatures in the EsignSignatures table, allowing agents and internal users to monitor pending signatures or initiate an in-person direct e-sign through an internal E-Sign Status view. Because the e-signature is built-in, there is no fee for usage.

Does ISi provide self-service options for policyholders?

Yes, ISi includes a dedicated Policyholder Portal engineered to operate independently of the main internal system to maintain the highest level of public security. This web-based portal empowers policyholders to securely monitor and manage their own accounts rather than relying on customer support. Insureds can use the portal to make premium payments, manage contact and paperless preferences, initiate a claim, upload images, and view or print essential policy documents like a declarations page or an ID card.

Does ISi utilize AI?

Yes, ISi integrates with AI and machine learning platforms. Specifically, the system has built-in core support for integrating with AI platforms to analyze policy and claim data using machine learning systems. This integration features a flexible, bidirectional data exchange:

  • Pushing Data: ISi can be configured to automatically push data and files to the AI system based on specific triggers. This can occur immediately when a new transaction is processed on a policy, when a new photo or document is attached, or it can be manually triggered by a user.
  • Pulling Data: The machine learning platform can actively call an ISi web service to pull necessary policy details and links to retrieve files.

Furthermore, the system is designed to process automated responses from the AI. Once the machine learning system completes its data analysis, it can send updates back to ISi to trigger automated actions, such as adding a task or note, sending an email to the insured requesting more information, or even executing a policy endorsement to automatically add or remove coverage features.

How does ISi handle double-entry accounting records?

ISi uses double-entry accounting, which means every transaction records both a debit and a credit for the same amount. Debits usually increase asset or expense accounts, while credits usually increase liability, income, or equity accounts.

This keeps the books balanced because every journal entry must total zero. ISi also makes sure the debits and credits balance by accounting date, so transactions posted across different months do not cause the accounting periods to become mismatched.

What does an underwriting workbench look like for ISi?

Underwriters manage their daily work out of a centralized diary. The workflow is controlled by the ISTaskTypes table, which governs outstanding tasks and can even trigger automated "companion" or "follow-up" tasks. Tasks are often automatically generated by the system (for example, triggering underwriting cancellation reviews) and flow directly into the diary.

To efficiently distribute the workload, ISi allows the system to automatically assign tasks (such as using a round-robin or weighted round-robin approach) and ensures that the same underwriter is consistently assigned to handle all ongoing issues for a specific policy.

For policies that do not require a specific assigned underwriter, tasks can be routed to a general "underwriting" category. Any underwriter with access to that queue can view these unassigned tasks in their diary and pull them as they have capacity.

Once an underwriter completes a task, the system keeps it as a historical note. This allows management to audit the policy history and see exactly which underwriter worked on a specific task or approved a policy.

What kind of insurance business is ISi built for?

ISi is specifically designed to empower small P&C insurance companies and MGAs to compete with much larger carriers. By providing a comprehensive, end-to-end policy administration backbone at an affordable price point, ISi equips smaller organizations with the same advanced technological capabilities and third-party data integrations that are typically reserved for companies with massive IT budgets.

What rating engine does ISi use?

ISi uses its own proprietary, internally developed rating engine. The core of this engine is compiled into a DLL. Rather than relying on a hardcoded module or an external third-party rater, the ISi rating engine operates using a highly flexible, table-driven approach built around a custom "insurance rating programming language" designed by Modotech and configured according to the insurer’s specific underwriting rules and rating logic.

How does ISi protect sensitive data and prevent cyber attacks?

ISi employs several layers of security to protect sensitive information:

  1. Database Encryption: ISi utilizes a multilevel key approach to encrypt specific data elements within WDDX packets and database columns. The encryption keys themselves are stored in a dedicated, highly restricted database that acts as a vault to separate them from the main transactional data.
  2. Data Masking: To protect Personally Identifiable Information (PII) like Social Security Numbers or Driver's License numbers, the system uses data masking in the user interface (e.g., displaying XXX-XX-1234) so that full numbers are not exposed to users unless they have specific permissions to decrypt and view that page
  3. SQL Injection Prevention: To harden the ColdFusion web interface against SQL injection attacks, ISi wraps input parameters in CFQueryParam tags, which forces the database to treat user input strictly as data rather than executable code.
